Hot hatchbacks are quite popular in Europe and U.S. buyers are starting to realize great advantages that we are getting from these vehicles. Good news is that the 2015 Volkswagen Golf R will be also delivered to the U.S. market and we have a lot to like about it.
There is only one problem. This vehicle will come with U.S. specs and usually that does not mean a lot of good things. In this case it will offer slightly less power than what we are getting from European model. Same 2.0 liter turbocharged four cylinder engine will be used but instead of 296 hp the U.S. model comes with 290 hp which is still great.
Review Of 2015 Golf R
From the Mark Gilles, VW spokesperson we could hear that this hp drop is not because of changes to the engine and ECU. According to its statement same power will be delivered but because of the higher temperatures and that is the reason why those engines produce slightly less power in the US and Australia. Another reason for lower power results might be the fuel quality but this should not affect vehicles a lot.
Let’s talk about power and engine little bit more. Previous model was offered with 261 hp and the one before it had 237 hp while the R32 model came with 247 hp. This means that the 290 hp model that will be now delivered is the most powerful version we are getting. This is the most powerful hot hatch that has been ever offered and there is no doubt that everyone should be quite satisfied with performances that it will bring.
According to reports the 2015 Volkswagen Golf R will accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 4.9 seconds. This applies to both European and U.S. specs model that are delivered with dual clutch gearbox in combination with 4Motion all wheel drive. Power is delivered to all wheels so we will be getting enough grip in almost all conditions. With manual transmission acceleration from 0 to 62 mph is done in 5.3 seconds which is about 0.4 seconds better than what we had with previous version.
The 2015 Volkswagen Golf R should offer about 33 mpg which is much better than 28 mpg that we were getting from currently available model with six speed manual transmission. Even with increased power it is still better in fuel efficiency. Maximum, 280 pound feet of torque is available from 1800 to 5500 rpm while the max power of 290 hp is available at 5500 rpm.
To achieve this amount of power from only 2.0 liter engine there were needs to bring significant improvements. This is one of the most powerful four cylinder production engines in the world. Completely redesigned or modified components include high pressure injection system, turbocharger, cylinder head, exhaust valves, valve seats, springs, pistons and similar.
